Understanding Single Point Fuel Injection
Single point fuel injection, sometimes abbreviated as SPFI, refers to a basic type of fuel delivery system found on many older vehicles. Unlike modern cars which often use more advanced multi-point fuel injection systems, SPFI uses a single injector nozzle to deliver fuel into the intake system.
How Single Point Injection Works
In a single point injection system, there is one fuel injector nozzle located in the throttle body. The throttle body is the part of the air intake system that controls airflow into the engine. It contains a throttle valve that can open and close to regulate intake airflow.
The fuel injector nozzle sprays fuel into the throat of the throttle body, where it mixes with the incoming air. This mixed air-fuel mixture then enters the intake manifold runners that direct it to each cylinder to be combusted.
A computer known as the powertrain control module (PCM) monitors data from sensors and activates the fuel injector accordingly to provide the proper air-fuel ratio. The PCM varies the duration of injector opening time, known as the pulse width, to control the amount of fuel metered into the engine.
Benefits of Single Point Injection
There are some key reasons why single point fuel injection was so common in older vehicles before multiport fuel injection became the norm:
Cost – SPFI systems are mechanically simpler and cheaper to manufacture compared to more advanced multiport fuel injection. This helped keep vehicle costs down.
Adequate fuel delivery – While not as optimal as multiport injection, SPFI provides sufficient fuel delivery and air/fuel mixing for reliable everyday driving.
Compact design – Having just one main injector nozzle allows for a compact throttle body design. This saves space under the hood.
Easy maintenance – Since there is only one main fuel injector in a SPFI system, it’s easier to access and service compared to the multiple injectors in other setups.
While single point injection has its benefits, continual advances in fuel injection technology have led to its replacement in most modern vehicle engines by multiport fuel injection systems. Nonetheless, there are still a number of older SPFI-equipped vehicles on the road today. Understanding how SPFI systems operate allows for proper maintenance and service.
