Friction is a force that occurs when two surfaces slide or try to slide across each other. It works to resist the motion or attempted motion between the surfaces. Friction is actually a component of the overall contact force between two objects. Understanding friction and its role as part of contact force is important in physics and engineering.
What Causes Friction?
Friction arises from interactions at the microscopic level between two surfaces. Even surfaces that appear very smooth have rough spots and microscopic peaks and valleys. When two objects come into contact, the high points of one surface catch on the high points of the other. This interlocking resists any forces trying to slide the surfaces across one another.- The degree of friction depends on the materials involved. Some materials have atomic structures that interact more strongly, increasing friction. Surface finish also matters rougher surfaces typically have higher friction. Lubricants like oil or grease can get between the surfaces and reduce interactions, lowering friction.
Friction as a Component of Contact Force
When two objects are in contact, they exert force on each other. This overall contact force has two components:- Normal force - pushing surfaces together perpendicular to the contact surface
- Friction force - resisting motion between surfaces
Static and Kinetic Friction
There are two types of friction forces:- Static friction - occurs when surfaces are not moving relative to each other. It is required to start motion between stationary surfaces.
- Kinetic friction - arises once the surfaces are sliding. It acts to slow ongoing motion.
Importance of Friction
Friction is generally seen as a nuisance force that must be minimized in machines. However, it's also vitally important:- Allows objects to grip surfaces and not slip
- Enables traction for walking and driving
- Provides stability when pushing/pulling objects
- Allows us to pick up and hold objects in our hands
- Helps quickly stop motion through friction braking
